St George’s Primary School in Scarborough Celebrates Golden Jubilee
St George’s RC Primary School has officially marked an incredible milestone, celebrating the end of its 50th academic year with a spectacular day of festivities. The Golden Jubilee brought together current pupils, families and staff past and present to look back on five decades of education and shared memories.
The occasion was made memorable by a special visit from Monsignor Gerard Robinson, who joined the school community for the celebrations. The day included an anniversary Mass, where pupils sang with immense joy and thanksgiving with all who attended.
The anniversary has also provided a special opportunity to look back at the very beginning of the St George's story and a very special individual who helped it come into existence. St George’s roots began in the 1970s, when Canon Patrick Harney identified a vital need for the local parish to have its own school to serve the growing Catholic community. Thanks to his dedication to its founding, the school opened its doors to its first pupils in September 1975.
Reflecting on those early days, a striking parallel connects the school's origins to the present day. After its Autumn opening, St George's was officially blessed by the Bishop during the summer term of 1976—right in the middle of a scorching British heatwave, mirroring the warm weather experienced this June as the school carried out its celebrations.
Canon Harney is now retired at the remarkable age of 95 and living in York. Hearing of the school’s milestone, he expressed his joy in seeing the original vision continue to flourish decades later saying, "God Bless everyone at St George's." He added how incredibly pleased he is to see that the school is still doing so well 50 years on.
Headteacher Mr Andrew Krlic added “We would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this special day possible – the children really enjoyed the fun outdoor games, bouncing castle and ice cream van! It was lovely to spend time with the parishioners and staff past and present. I am confident that the school has a bright future ahead. “
